Meet a Ford Vedette
and a Ford Comète
Apart from being the subjects of Thierry Dubois’ illustrations, they have a claim to fame. They were the only Ford cars to be available with the Cotal electromagnetic gearbox.

Interesting!
Also possibly using one of the smallest V8 engines in the history of Ford, at just under 2.2 litres.

....which provided no discernible power.
Mind you Ford Germany used to use an 1183cc V4.

For some reason I tend to think of a 1.2 litre 4 cylinder as normal, while I think of a 2.2 V8 as extremely small.

The Vedette’s other claim to fame is that it was originally developed by Ford North America after WWII as a US-market compact. We almost got that one here.

Well, the displacement per cylinder in that V8 is smaller than in your i4.

Well, this post came from a Google search about the Cotal ‘box which I had read about in the past and wondered about and then the only video I could find of one in use came up with a Vedette of which I had never previously heard so one thing leads to another.
